The holiday season is fast approaching, and with it comes lots of opportunities for togetherness with friends and family. At Chimney Rock, we are always looking for ways to take that togetherness outside. When the house is getting a little stuffy or there are too many family members from out of town sharing a small space, it’s time to hit the trails. Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the nature of Hickory Nut Gorge as fall turns to winter.
Fall color is still lingering throughout the Park as November begins. The view of the Blue Ridge foothills from the top of Chimney Rock is always unbeatable, but don’t forget to spend some time on the other trails, too. Wander through a colorful hardwood forest on the way to Hickory Nut Falls, or see for yourself where the Four Seasons trail gets its name. Learn more about the flora and fauna that call the Park home on guided hikes with our naturalists, every Monday in November. Our wilder teammates will make an appearance later in the month at our Thanksgiving Weekend Animal Encounters for some educational fun while school is out, so skip the mall on Black Friday and bring the whole crew outside.
If you have visitors coming in December, bundle up and savor the Park in one of the quieter months. One of our favorite events of the year, Santa on the Chimney, returns for its 25th year on December 3rd and 10th. Santa practices for Christmas Eve every year by climbing down one of the world’s largest natural chimneys with help from his friends at Fox Mountain Guides. Plus, write letters to Santa, meet Mrs. Claus, and make festive crafts. This year, Santa’s elves will make a visit to the Old Rock Cafe before the event to cook up a delicious breakfast. In the week between Christmas and the New Year, join us for Winter Break Animal Encounters and get some fresh air during your time off.
Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day to give our team some time with their families. We hope to see you in the Park some time this season as you enjoy togetherness with yours. Happy Holidays from Chimney Rock Management.
