Let’s Celebrate 10 Years with a Not Your Typical Garden Party!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge came onto the Lake Lure scene. To mark this special occasion, volunteers are hard at work preparing to host a special FUNraising and FUNDraising event. Make plans now to join the fun on Friday, June 2, 2023, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at the Riverside Event Center, 3105 Memorial Highway in Lake Lure.  Here’s the scoop on what you need to know:

  • Tickets are $80/per person and are limited! Buy yours today at llfb.org
  • Silent auction and raffle.
  • Cash bar.
  • Three-course buffet dinner provided by Green River Catering, and dessert bar.
  • Local musician Johnnie Blackwell will play for the event, generously sponsored in honor of Charlene Efird, a founding LLFB board member.

As part of commemorating the 10th Anniversary, the education program at the Bridge is being enhanced. Currently, all classes are conducted “open air,” which means they sometimes must be canceled or moved due to inclement weather, or just to provide shelter from the hot sun. To grow the vision and attract even more visitors to the beautiful Lake Lure area, plans are to build a structure where classes and events can be comfortably conducted regardless of weather constraints. All proceeds from the Not Your Typical Garden Party! event will go toward building and operating the new Education Center.

As spring transitions into summer, the Bridge will be buzzing with activities – Last year, more than 186,000 visitors came to the Bridge, and this year that number is expected to surpass 200,000. People who visit the bridge are enamored with all that is offered and with the beauty the gardens feature each season. From the beginning, volunteers have lovingly created and maintained the gardens and delight in sharing information about the Bridge’s amazing 10-year history with all who visit. It’s fair to say that the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is a favorite destination in the Hickory Nut Gorge area!

Our volunteers are present every Tuesday and Thursday. They love “talking shop” and are always happy to answer your questions. Plants and merchandise are for sale when volunteers are present. If you would like information on volunteering at the Bridge, please send a note to info@lakelurefloweringbridge.org. You can find all you need to know about the Bridge, educational programs, information about visiting, volunteering, and much more at www.llfb.org.

What’s Coming in May and June – Expect to see colorful blooms popping throughout the gardens, and you will enjoy a Bridge Full of Butterflies and Baskets.

This late spring seasonal feature runs through May 30.

Join Master Gardener Bill Massey on Tuesday, May 23, at 10:00 am for a class on how to install Drip Irrigation in your garden beds. Bill will teach you about the components of the system, how to put them together, and how to install it into your garden. Drip irrigation is a great way to water your garden plants deeply and save on water usage. This class will be held at the Welcome Terrace and is free and open to the public.

We will be celebrating our pollinators on Saturday, June 24 from 10 am – 1 pm. Bring the family for children’s art activities, games, insect releases, educational materials, storytellers, plant sales, guest speakers and much more.

This year’s Pollinator Week (June 19 – 25) is raising awareness about climate change and its effect on our pollinators.
