There are many milestones in a child’s life. Do you remember when your child or a young relative turned one? What about their thirteenth birthday? Learning to drive, and then saying goodbye as they leave for college are milestones marked with joy and sadness. Children are our most precious gift, and through them we build a hope for the future. Parents often have to make difficult decisions when raising children, and if we think about how quickly they grow up and leave home some of those decisions are life changers.
Choosing a school to attend is sometimes a decision that is taken from parents because their children must attend the district school where they live. However, in 1996 the North Carolina General Assembly passed the Charter School Act (CSA) thus allowing parents to have a choice in their children’s education. Lake Lure Classical Academy, located at 1058 Island Creek Road in Lake Lure, is a local, public charter school that provides parents with an opportunity to provide their children with an alternative to traditional public schools.
There is no tuition to attend Lake Lure Classical Academy (LLCA) and open enrollment takes place annually from January to March. LLCA facilitates its annual enrollment/school lottery process through Lotterease, an independent, automated lottery system used to manage applications and waiting lists. Even though we have limited seats available in each grade level, the lottery process allows for a fair and equitable process for all families. The lottery and application for the 2024-2025 school year opens on January 2, 2025 and ends March 18, 2025.
You may be wondering why parents choose to enroll their children in LLCA. The reasons are varied, but LLCA offers:
- A safe, supportive learning environment for all students;
- AdvancEd Cognia National Accredited K-12 school;
- Many Community partnerships including Lake Lure Police and Fire departments; Chimney Rock State Park, and Rutherford Outdoor Coalition;
- Outdoor Classrooms and a focus on outdoor learning and environmental education;
- Classical Education
- Rigorous content-based curriculum aligned to North Carolina state standards;
- A focused approach to developing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills;
- Teacher-led instruction that includes exploration and hands-on learning;
- Experiential learning through field trips, camping trips, and state competitions;
- Athletic opportunities for students in grades 5th through 12th;
- Fine arts, music, and theatre;
In addition to the many extracurricular activities, LLCA incorporates an engaging Core Knowledge curriculum that adheres to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. The Core Knowledge curriculum provides a structured, content-rich foundation of knowledge across various subjects, building on itself grade-by-grade, which can lead to improved academic performance, deeper understanding, and better preparation for higher-level learning, especially by ensuring students have a shared base of knowledge to draw from across disciplines; essentially, it aims to give students a comprehensive understanding of key concepts rather than just teaching isolated skills.
The high school program offers a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum leading to a high school diploma. High school students can also dual-enroll in the College and Career Promise enabling them to take classes through Isothermal Community College (ICC). High school students who dual enroll in college gain college credits early, potentially saving money on tuition, shortening their time to graduation, experiencing college-level coursework before fully committing, and getting a head start on their chosen academic path, all while still in high school; essentially easing the transition into higher education and potentially exploring career interests earlier. Many of LLCA’s high school graduates earn their Associate’s Degree alongside their high school diploma.
If you are looking for a small school with a big heart, and a school that places the interests and individual needs of students first, then LLCA is the school for you and your family.
