Winter may just be the perfect time to explore the trails of the Park… With leaves fallen from the trees our trails offer long sweeping views of Hickory Nut Gorge that are typically shaded by foliage. Seeking adventure, solitude, and incredible vistas? Try the highest trail we offer, Skyline Trail. Looking for a quick hike with a big reward? Hike the Hickory Nut Falls Trail to see how winter changes the landscape and creates a striking icy view. Have a New Year’s resolution to challenge yourself? Hike the Outcroppings Trail’s winding staircases to spot unique rock formations, and marvel at the Gorge down below.

As a local, or even someone visiting for an extended period of time you’ll soon realize that trails are quieter this time of year. Fewer guests mean a more reflective and solitary hike. Plus, no line for the elevator. Chimney Rock State Park is the perfect place to relax your mind after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. The Park is open year-round, and our Ticket Plaza hours are 8:30am to 4:30pm guests can hike until 6pm. While you’re here, think about picking up an annual pass to enjoy a year of unlimited visits. We love seeing locals enjoying the Park the way we do, and we look forward to providing unique experiences to our Passholders in 2026.
While many species that call our area home are experiencing hibernation or dormancy during the winter, you’ll still spot lots of wildlife. Many animals are out during the day preparing for their periods of rest. You will also encounter many bird species while you hike as they are easily spotted against bare branches and cloudy skies, one of these being the Pileated Woodpecker. You will hear these birds before you see them, but once spotted you won’t be able to take your eyes off of them. With a black and white striped body, and a striking red crest these birds are a non-migratory staple of the Park.
We are looking forward to bringing back even more great events this year. Start the year on the right foot with the First Day Hike on New Year’s Day. This free hike begins at the historic park gate at 8am on January 1st, and does not require advance registration. This is a unique experience and the only time during the year that the general public can walk up the three mile Park road. The First Day Hike, led by N.C. State Park Rangers, is a great opportunity to jump start a year full of outdoor recreation. We also have some wonderful Passholder Experiences planned for the year, including a “Behind the Scenes – Elevator Tour” on January 22nd, come learn about the history of the Park’s elevator and how it continues to make nature accessible. Keep an eye on the website for more information about our Annual Groundhog Day Celebration on February 2nd, where our groundhog ambassador Tater will hopefully give us some good meteorological predictions.
We are looking forward to a beautiful New Year full of elevated experiences. We hope to see you soon!
