Chimney Rock’s star rodent, “Tater,” called for an early spring here in Western North Carolina. As March kicks off, we here at the Park hope his prediction rings true! This month we will start to see signs of a changing season, starting with spring ephemerals. Ephemerals are plants with short life cycles that typically grow when conditions are most favorable. Join a local naturalist on hikes throughout the season to explore these often-overlooked features of the Park on Saturday, March 21st and Saturday, April 18th.

This time of year, the Park changes week by week as buds, blooms, and leaves start to color the forest floor and canopy. You can also experience this transformation on our weekly Hikes With a Naturalist, every Monday in March. These hikes are a wonderful way to explore different trails and learn more about the species that call Chimney Rock home.

After a winter filled with snow and ice are you itching to get your homeschoolers out of the house and into nature? Experience the Park during our quieter months during Chimney Rock’s Winter Homeschool Day on Wednesday, March 11th. You and your learners will have the opportunity to participate in programs such as “Chimney Rock Through the Years,” “Home Sweet Habitat,” “Tracks & Traces,” & “Mossin’ Around.”
With warmer weather and longer days right around the corner, now is the perfect time to grab an Annual Pass and enjoy a gorgeous spring day, plus a year full of Park visits in every season! This spring will be the first that the Park has been able to open since Hurricane Helene in 2024. We are beyond grateful for the opportunity to once again showcase our beautiful mountains, and encourage everyone to spend more time in the great outdoors. We are also incredibly thrilled to be bringing back many beloved traditions including the 70th Annual Easter Sunrise Service! This event is free as always, but attendees must reserve a parking pass ahead of time. If you plan to join us for this famous local tradition, get your passes now as space is limited. Reservations can be made online at ChimneyRockPark.com
Don’t forget to bring your camera when you visit Chimney Rock! Migrating birds, the return of wildlife after winter hibernation, and beautiful blooms will be on full display. Our spring photo contest, “Wilderness in Bloom” starts April 1st. Send us your best shots from the season for a chance to win complimentary Park access and bragging rights for the whole year!
The first week of March also marks the end of our winter hours. Starting March 8th we will be open daily from 8:30-5:30pm, and guests can hike until 7. Before your visit make sure to check the What’s in Bloom page on our website to see what blooms you may see during your time at the Rock.
We hope to see you on the trails soon, and Happy Spring!
