Two restaurant recommendations from a Lake Lure “half-back” visitor

By Lorraine Hofheinz

For the past 20 years, I’ve spent my two-week vacation in Lake Lure near Rumbling Bald Resort. Over two decades, I’ve watched many restaurants come and go, but a few standout spots remain. As an infrequent visitor to the area, I remember how hard it was to choose the right spot for a special dinner, so I wanted to share a “half-back’s” local review for anyone looking to save some research time.

My absolute favorite is Appalachia Restaurant at the Lodge on Lake Lure. The scenery, service, and meals are everything you could ask for—whether I’m having this special vacation dinner or celebrating a birthday. While bread isn’t complimentary, the amuse-bouche more than makes up for it (and I rarely miss the extra bread anyway). If you’re lucky enough to find the blackened shrimp with jambalaya on the menu, order it! Once a signature dish on the menu it is now offered as a special.  My husband and I usually both order it when it’s available. In the past, I’ve also enjoyed their pork chops, short ribs, and perfectly grilled, flavorful fish.

My second recommendation is The Highlands Restaurant. Previously located in Chimney Rock before the hurricane, this talented chef and his team have relocated—believe it or not—underneath a gas station! Don’t let the unique location fool you; this isn’t just a barbecue joint. You can get an incredible fish dinner, and every meat dish I’ve ordered has been cooked to perfection and served over thoughtfully prepared sides like quinoa.

I hope these recommendations help visitors and locals alike—though I’m sure many locals would agree with my top two choices!
