Summer may be winding down, but there’s still plenty of great stuff to do in our beautiful Mountain Home. And in Lake Lure proper there’s an awesome tavern and meadery in the form of Fae Nectar!
If you haven’t checked out Lake Lure’s hidden gem you really should go. The mead and refreshments are great, but a real star of the show is the atmosphere! My first experience with the place was back before Hurricane Helene, even. Some of my best friends and I gathered at the Meadery to have some good food, try their signature drink and play games. The signature drink was a real draw especially for my friend Will Moody who had done a lot of gaming with us over the years, but never really tried Mead. And had not been to Lake Lure before.
Fae Nectar is all about good times, like much of Lake Lure, and for me and the guys it certainly delivered on that. Moody said the mead was a great way to unwind while gaming – sweet but not overly so and not too boozy. Like a great game, it was just the right mix of “punch” and “bite” in that it included sugar but also the tantalizing sting of alcohol.
The game of choice for Moody, myself and the gang that day was Dungeons and Dragons. Don’t get me wrong, we played some card games that day, too, but playing a game of D&D in an actual tavern was really special for us. The feeling of recounting Moody’s epic showdown with a dragon was only heightened by the natural beauty of the mountains right outside the windows of Fae Nectar. Sitting in that tavern, sipping mead and rolling dice to take our stand against evil while supporting each other in our own individual fights, felt like one perfect moment in the universe. And it was a great metaphor illustrating just how important great friends can be in real life.
This cherished memory of gaming with my friend Will at Fae Nectar became even more precious to me this past month, as he passed away from heart failure on August 17 at just 44 years old. Take the time, spare the moment to sip the mead and enjoy life dear readers. You never know when it will be the final round.
