This quiet window, as shorter days and cooler temperatures begin to lead us into the most colorful months of the year is the perfect time to explore all the Park has to offer. Trails begin to slow down, the last blooms of the season will be on display, and wildlife sightings are even more common as they begin to prepare for hibernation. While you’re here enjoy 75-mile panoramic views from the Chimney, hike along the Hickory Nut Falls trail to enjoy the breeze or take your adventure to the top! Catch stunning views of the Rock’s migrating and resident bird species, from lookouts like Exclamation and Peregrine’s point. Whether you’re new to birding, or you’ve checked off every bird in the field guide; Chimney Rock has much to offer.

While most of us may complain about the 5:00 traffic on I-26, our feathered friends have a much tougher journey to get home to their overwintering nests before winter’s cold sets in here in the United States. Their route home is along the Atlantic Flyway, a North-to-South superhighway for migrating birds. It begins in Greenland, and follows the Eastern seaboard down to the Tropics. In true fashion we show many species of birds southern hospitality during their stay: good food, clean water sources, and lots of trees to nest in to make the Appalachians a fantastic stop on their journey. Luckily for us, we get to see these yearly visitors in all of their glory.
Make sure to grab your binoculars as Tanagers, Vireos, and Warblers can be seen heading southbound through the Park in addition to our year-round residents. September and October also bring a notable influx of raptors, such as Broad-winged Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, and more. Don’t forget about one of the Park’s special residents – The Peregrine Falcon. These federally endangered falcons are the fastest living animal with a dive speed of more than 200 mph. They can often be seen soaring through the gorge, but don’t blink, you might miss them!
Join us this year as we celebrate the 18th Annual Flock to the Rock Celebration! Enjoy a day full of birding activities such as guided bird walks, live raptor programs, migration stations, pollinator activities, a hawk watch, and more! This event will run from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 19th and is included with Park admission. This event is the perfect way to kick off the fall season, and to learn more about Western North Carolina’s diverse ecosystems. We’re looking forward to another great year full of fall migration fun!
